Even while undergoing her own cancer treatment, Melanie supports other cancer patients in our community by volunteering for the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery Program. We’re inspired by Melanie’s perseverance, generosity and courage, and can’t wait to hear her speak at this year’s event!

“Diagnosed in October 2013 with stage IV breast cancer, I am a 10-year survivor (and metastatic thriver) still battling cancer and undergoing monthly chemotherapy infusions.  

Early in my journey, I overheard a man in the chemo suite looking for a ride home after treatment and I realized that this was an unacceptable situation. I told my family I had to find a way to give rides to cancer patients. I didn’t know how to get started myself, so when I learned about Road to Recovery (R2R), I had to volunteer. 

I’ve given dozens of rides everywhere from Hoquiam to Seattle. My husband is also a R2R driver and bought us a Subaru Forester because we heard it was a great passenger car (and it is!!).

I will give rides to treatment, even while undergoing my own treatment, for as long as I possibly can because no one should ever have to worry about how they’re going to get to an important appointment.”
